Jason Garrett press conference: a receiver by committee http://www.cowboysauthorizedshops.com/au...nce-jersey , ad coach Jason Garrett addressed the media. Here’s what he had to say. (All Garrett answers are paraphrases of what he said and not direct quotes).A fast start is key for the Cowboys (and obviously anyone)Jason Garrett noted how important a fast start is for the state of the team. He discussed how you obviously want to get a three and out on defense and score right away, but the nature of the NFL is that things don’t always go as planned.Leighton Vander Esch and Sean Lee’s lockers are next to one another, but it’s not intentionalThe rookie and The General have their lockers next to one another. Jason Garrett is known for sending subliminal messages of this kind, but he simply said that it was a good thing that they spend time together and nothing at all orchestrated with them ending up there.DeMarcus Lawrence’s shoulder is fineDeMarcus Lawrence appeared on Wednesday’s injury report with a shoulder issue, but he was a full participant in practice. Jason Garrett noted that it’s “something he’s been dealing with” but been able to practice so all seems fine there.Byron Jones’ experience playing corner has certainly helped himPro Football Focus graded Byron Jones as the best cornerback in the NFL through three weeks, and naturally this seemed like praise for Kris Richard (who helped orchestrate the position switch for Byron). Jason Garrett praised how well Byron Jones has been and seemed to leave it at that.Jason Garrett can’t remember the exact date, but initial conversations at end of the season were part of move for Byron to cornerWhen pressed on exactly when the Cowboys decided to move Byron, Jason Garrett said that he couldn’t remember the exact date but that it was right around when offseason planning began. He said the Cowboys felt like he has the capability to play corner in the NFL and felt good about where Xavier Woods was to compete at safety which helped round out the idea.Garrett also declined to fully answer if it was before or after Kris Richard’s hire When pressed further, in fact pressed more specifically, Jason Garrett was outright asked if this move was decided on before or after the Cowboys hired Kris Richard.“It was probably in that initial process” was how the head coach fielded that one noting that Kris Richard’s opinion definitely mattered.Lions running backs will be a challengeJason Garrett gave praise to Kerryon Johnson Maliek Collins Jersey , LeGarrette Blount, and Theo Riddick. Shocker here, but they’re all great football players and Jason Garrett is readying the Cowboys for them. There’s no lack of confidence on offense, even if Allen Hurns “expressed frustration”The Athletic wrote about Allen Hurns feeling like he deserves the ball more (this was not at all said in an arrogant way), and naturally that made its way to Jason Garrett. When asked if this was an issue or if the offense was suffering from any lack of confidence Jason Garrett said “not at all” and that Wednesday was a really good practice. The Cowboys want to be a “receiver by committee, if you will”Dallas has been using a variety of wide receivers (they have seven on the roster to be fair) so far this season, and many have championed the idea of them settling in on some in more permanent roles. Jason Garrett didn’t really seem to hip to this idea as he specifically said the Cowboys wanted a “receiver by committee.”The Cowboys are trying to work their way through punt coverage problemsA bit of an underrated statistic drop goes to ESPN’s Todd Archer who noted during a question to Jason Garrett that the Cowboys have already given up more yards on punt returns through three games in 2018 than they did all of last season. That’s insane. Jason Garrett didn’t really dive too far into this noting that the Cowboys simply have to do a better job. Dak Prescott and Cam Newton find themselves in similar situations entering Sunday's regular-season opener at Carolina. Both quarterbacks are adjusting to a new group of receivers and playing behind banged-up offensive lines. The Cowboys will be looking to replace wide receiver Dez Bryant , the team's career leader in touchdown catches, and tight end Jason Whitten, who retired after 15 seasons. That's no easy task. The primary options to be slot receiver are Cole Beasley, Allen Hurns and rookie Michael Gallup. But Tavon Austin and Terrance Williams could be factors Authentic Chris Jones Jersey , too. Geoff Swaim and Blake Jarwin are the top two tight ends."I think each of the guys we have who are going to be up for this game are versatile," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "You can put them in different spots."Dallas also has holes to fill up front with All-Pro center Travis Frederick battling a rare auto-immune disorder called Guillain-Barre syndrome and is doubtful for the game. Six-year veteran Joe Looney will get the start alongside rookie left guard Connor Williams. However Pro Bowl right guard Zack Martin is set to start after dealing with a hyperextended left knee in the second preseason game.Newton faces similar issues in Carolina. The Panthers upgraded their speed at wide receiver in the offseason by trading for veteran Torrey Smith, signing free agent slot receiver Jairus Wright and using a first-round draft pick on D.J. Moore. All three figure to play a role in the passing game alongside returning No. 1 receiver Devin Funchess."We don't know what we have yet and that is why Sunday is so important for everybody — because we finally find out," Newton said.Carolina's offensive line was going to have a difficult time replacing All-Pro left guard Andrew Norwell — and that was before it got hit hard by the injuries.Second-team All-Pro right tackle Daryl Williams, left tackle Matt Kalil and Norwell replacement Amini Silatolu all went down with knee injuries in the preseason. Kalil went on injured reserve , meaning Taylor Moton will make his first NFL start at left tackle. Williams and Silatolu returned to practice this week, but it's still unclear if they'll be healthy enough to play against Dallas.RARE HOME OPENER: Coach Ron Rivera joked this week that he "has to get used to" the idea of playing a home opener. In Rivera's eight seasons in Carolina, this is only the second time the team has opened the season at home.DAVIS SUSPENSION: The Panthers will be without weakside linebacker Thomas Davis, who's suspended four games for testing positive for PEDs.That's a pretty big blow to the defense given Davis' skills and leadership. But Rivera is high on 2015 first-round draft pick Shaq Thompson, who has had an outstanding preseason filling in. Thompson was drafted as Davis' heir apparent, but the veteran continued playing at a high level Youth Terrance Williams Jersey , thus limiting Thompson's reps. So this is Thompson's chance to shine.Rivera said Thompson has potential to be "an elite linebacker in the league."ELLIOTT FALLING FOWARD: Ezekiel Elliott doesn't have to worry about a suspension hanging over his head to start this season. The Cowboys' third-year running back may be primed for a big season, which concerns Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly."He's an elite running back," Kuechly said. "He's big, he's strong and he's powerful. He will run though you, and he always falls forward (for more yards). ... So when we hit him, we have to keep him where he's at and not let him do that."McCAFFREY'S ROLE: It's time to find out if Rivera backs up his statement about wanting to get running back Christian McCaffrey "25-30 touches per game." Rivera has said the team would like to use McCaffrey similar to how the San Diego Chargers used Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson. That seems like a lot of touches, particularly for a player with a slender build such as McCaffrey. But it's hard to blame Carolina for wanting to get the ball into the hands of its playmaker as much as possible.KICKING DEBUT: Brett Maher is set for his NFL regular-season debut as the replacement for Cowboys career field goal leader Dan Bailey. Dallas cut the second-most accurate kicker in league history because of Bailey's struggles after an injury last season and his relatively large salary for his position. The 28-year-old Maher has four years of CFL experience."In this profession, every single thing that you do is kind of pressure-packed," Maher said.AP Sports Writer Schuyler Dixon in Dallas, Texas contributed to this report.

t running back while they deal with injuries at the position Authentic Sean Lee Jersey , coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday.Morris, 29, was a sixth-round draft pick of Washington in 2012 when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator. He rushed for 2,888 yards and 20 touchdowns during his first two seasons. The move won't become official until he passes a physical."Alf did a great job for us in the two years I was with him," Shanahan said. "It's not flashy, but he runs extremely hard. He's very reliable."The 49ers are dealing with injuries to their top-two running backs following their preseason opener. Jerick McKinnon suffered a calf injury Sunday and is expected to be out at least a week. His backup, Matt Breida, separated his shoulder against Dallas on Thursday and could miss the entire preseason.Joe Williams has missed the last two practices due to a death in the family, though Shanahan said he expects Williams to return to the team in Houston this week when the 49ers will have two joint practices with the Texans ahead of their preseason game Saturday.Shanahan said San Francisco wouldn't have brought in Morris if he didn't have a chance of making the 53-man roster."I think with some of the injuries that we've had, he does have a chance to compete," Shanahan said. "He's getting here late, but we'll see how he does over these next few weeks. If he's running the same way he always has, he's going to have a chance."Morris has played six seasons, including the past two with the Cowboys. He started five games in 2017, rushing for 547 yards on 115 carries. His 4.8-yard average was his highest since his rookie campaign. Morris logged at least 1,000 yards during his first three seasons in Washington and has 5 Youth Tyron Smith Jersey ,503 yards rushing with 32 touchdowns during his six-year career.NOTES: CB Richard Sherman returned to team drills in a limited capacity Monday for the first time since tweaking his hamstring earlier in training camp . The team announced TE George Kittle (shoulder) was listed as week-to-week after suffering a shoulder injury Thursday against the Cowboys. Cleveland has no quarterback competition. The Browns have made it clear that the starting job is Tyrod Taylor's, but that hasn't quieted the buzz around Baker Mayfield, who had a dazzling preseason debut last week. The No. 1 overall pick will follow Taylor on Friday night and play up to two quarters against Buffalo in his first game action in front of Cleveland fans hoping he can lead them to a brighter future — just not yet.Browns coach Hue Jackson is adamant about Mayfield learning behind Taylor and said the Heisman Trophy winner is going along with the plan."Baker wants to play — we all know that — but I think Baker also understands that when his time comes, the organization and myself will make the best decision when that is, and he gets that," Jackson said. "Right now, Tyrod is our starting quarterback."Taylor, who went 5 for 5 in two series in last week's win over the Giants, will get a chance to play against his former team. He said part of his drive this season comes from the Bills trading him in March despite him helping end their 17-year playoff drought last year."Definitely, how I think it ended there, it's motivation for this year," Taylor said. "Not necessarily for this game, but this year."Meanwhile, Bills coach Sean McDermott won't say who's starting for his team, but the expectation is AJ McCarron will get his turn after Nathan Peterman started in the preseason opener against Carolina last week. What's intriguing is when Josh Allen, the No. 7 overall pick http://www.cowboysauthorizedshops.com/au...nce-jersey , will enter the game.McDermott has insisted that he's being very cautious in not wanting to rush Allen's development. Allen went 9 of 19 for 116 yards and a touchdown in playing the entire second half against Carolina. For Bills receiver Corey Coleman, Friday's game will be a quick return to a place he couldn't wait to leave. The 2016 first-round pick had two disappointing seasons with the Browns and asked to be traded when he was dropped to second-string. Browns general manager John Dorsey dealt Coleman to the Bills two weeks ago for a seventh-round pick in 2020.Speaking of receivers, could the Browns have a new one on their roster by kickoff?Dez Bryant was visiting the team's headquarters in Berea, Ohio, on Thursday and there was a chance the meeting could lead to the three-time Pro Bowl selection signing with Cleveland. The 29-year-old receiver was released by the Dallas Cowboys after eight seasons in April and has been waiting to latch on with another team. He turned down a three-year contract offer from Baltimore, which may still have interest in him.Elsewhere on Friday night, the Giants are at Detroit, Kansas City is at Atlanta, Miami is at Carolina and Arizona is at New Orleans. What to look for around the league:HEY, WE KNOW YOUAt Ford Field, both first-year coaches could have been leading the other team.Pat Shurmur interviewed with his hometown Lions before New York hired him, and Matt Patricia was in talks with the Giants and ended up in Detroit."I felt like if it had worked out here, I would have been excited about the opportunity," said Shurmur, who went to high school near the Lions' training facility and was a Michigan State standout. "I certainly feel great about where I'm at. I couldn't be in a better place. I pinch myself every day being the head coach of the Giants."Both coaches have another thing in common: refusing to provide any hints about their plans Friday night.Shurmur wouldn't say if rookie running back Saquon Barkley or star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will play. Barkley missed three straight practices against the Lions because of a strained left hamstring. Beckham looked healthy, but he has not played since breaking his left ankle 10 months ago and having surgery.Patricia Maliek Collins Jersey , meanwhile, wouldn't say if quarterback Matthew Stafford or defensive end Ezekiel Ansah would play in their first preseason game.LOOKING TO FLYAfter being held to one first down and 34 total yards in the first half of last week's 17-0 loss at the Jets in their preseason opener, Atlanta will try again to get its offense moving against Kansas City.Coach Dan Quinn held out running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman and wide receiver Julio Jones and limited quarterback Matt Ryan to one series against the Jets.Starters likely will see limited action again against the Chiefs. Quinn is looking to make decisions on young players before roster cuts later in the preseason.FOR STARTERSDolphins 35-year-old running back Frank Gore is expected to see his first action of the preseason as he competes for a starting spot with Kenyan Drake.Miami will be without wide receiver DeVante Parker, who broke a finger earlier this week. Coach Adam Gase said all four quarterbacks would play, including Brock Osweiler and David Fales, who are competing for the No. 2 spot behind starter Ryan Tannehill.Cam Newton will play into the second quarter for Carolina and coach Ron Rivera said he'd like the first-team offense to run the two-minute drill if the opportunity presents itself.GETTING AN EDGEThe Saints are trying to see which edge pass rusher can best take pressure off 2017 All-Pro end Cameron Jordan.Alex Okafor, who started much of last season until tearing his Achilles, had another leg injury at practice this week and it's unclear how long he'll be out. That raises urgency to try to get first-round draft choice Marcus Davenport ready. Davenport has missed about two weeks of practices and the preseason opener with an undisclosed ailment.Meanwhile, the Cardinals' first unit will play more this week after just one series in the opener. Sam Bradford completed his only pass for just 6 yards. The Cardinals drove for a TD on that possession behind its running game. David Johnson gained 14 yards in each of his two carries to start the game, and will likely get a pass or two thrown his way against the Saints.AP Pro Football Writer Dennis Waszak Jr. and AP Sports Writers Bob Baum, Larry Lage, Brett Martel, Charles Odum, Steve Reed, John Wawrow and Tom Withers contributed.

e Cowboys and Titans Color Rush Maliek Collins Jersey , Dallas ended up making plenty of mistakes that led to their first home loss of the year, a 28-14 win for the Titans that significantly reduces Dallas’ odds of any playoff appearance. These were the five plays that shaped the game. Ezekiel Elliott dropped for a loss on second downOn the opening drive of the game, the Cowboys were moving the ball well. Zeke was running well and Dak Prescott found both Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup early for big gains. Before we knew it, Dallas was in striking distance of the endzone. Facing second and four from the Tennessee 17-yard line, the Cowboys ran it with Elliott but he was tackled for a three yard loss. It then brought up a third and long that Dallas didn’t convert, and forced the Cowboys to settle for a field goal, which Brett Maher surprisingly missed. After a drive that was going strong, the Cowboys offense fizzled out in scoring position and came away with zero points. Early momentum was lost.Kevin Byard picks off Dak in the endzone, celebrates on the starAfter scoring a touchdown and recovering a Titans fumble, the Cowboys had a chance to go up 14-0 before the end of the first quarter. After a huge pass to Ezekiel Elliott that picked up 37 yards, the Cowboys had first and goal at the four yard line. Elliott got stuffed for a short loss making it second and goal on the six when Dak did this:The pass was too high and one that Prescott should have never thrown into double-coverage. The talented Kevin Byard brought it in for an interception, making it three different red zone trips for the Cowboys with a total of just seven points to show for it. The Titans would score a touchdown on the following drive. The game was forever changed after this particular play.La’el Collins’ false start kills another driveIt’s almost becoming a weekly ritual of talking about Connor Williams being called for holding and La’el Collins being called for a false start. After a Williams hold, the Cowboys had a first and 20 at their own 35-yard line in the third quarter. After moving the ball and getting to a manageable third and eight, Collins jumped early. Now, instead of a third and eight, it was a third and thirteen, and Prescott would get sacked on the conversion attempt, simultaneously fumbling the ball, which was recovered by Tennessee. That led to another score.Michael Gallup can’t get in bounds for a big catchDown 28-14 late in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys were desperately trying to move the ball in a last ditch effort to tie the game, giving everyone memories of the game in Washington two weeks ago. On second down at the Dallas 36, Prescott threw a deep ball down the sideline to Gallup, who had a chance to bring it in despite needing some toe-tapping heroics. Unfortunately, the rookie was unable to do so, and what would have been a 54-yard catch was merely an incompletion that brought up third and long. The Cowboys converted, but it took a lot more time to get in scoring position. Cowboys run a trick play in crunch time that fails miserablyAfter converting the aforementioned third and long and moving the ball again, the Cowboys found themselves in Tennessee territory for the first time in the second half. With first and ten on the Titans 13, they ran a reverse that put the ball in Cole Beasley’s hands and was designed to throw to Dak in the endzone. The blocking on the play was blown up immediately Allen Hurns Jersey , and Beasley had to scramble before tossing the ball to a blanketed Prescott near the goal line. It was a poorly executed play that failed to catch the defense off guard, and only served to take valuable time off the clock and give future opponents a free look at one of the few tricks up Scott Linehan’s sleeve. Three incomplete passes later and the Titans were kneeling to run the clock out and get the win. Just like we all expected, the Dallas Cowboys came through on Sunday night with a 27-20 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Okay, fine - maybe we weren’t so optimistic about this one, but we’ll gladly take it. The Cowboys put together a full 60 minutes of quality football and got their first road win of the year against a tough opponent. It wasn’t always pretty and got tense at times, but they made a bunch of plays to pull out the win.Things were heated from the start as both these teams exchanged pleasantries prior to kickoff. It was a great win with plenty of things to talk about. Here are 10 thoughts on the Cowboys big road win in Philadelphia.1. The RookieRookie linebacker Leighton Vander Esch drew first blood with the first big play of the game when he stepped in front of a Carson Wentz pass for an interception. His coverage skills were hyped up prior to the draft and the Cowboys wanted that type of athleticism roaming around. On Sunday night, he showed everyone just what he’s capable of.Not only did Vander Esch make the pick, but he has the awareness to stay on his feet and keep fighting for yards on the return. It was worth an extra 28 yards of field position. Nice job, rook. Not only did LVE start the game strong, but he finished strong as well. Vander Esch ended the game with 13 tackles, all solo, but none was more sweet than number this one.Man, that looks familiar. Where have I seen that before? Oh yeah, I remember...Vander Esch stopped the Eagles on third down and Jeff Heath came through with a big fourth down stop. The defense came through! It looks like the Cowboys might have found themselves another first-round All-Pro.2. Martin gives us a scareThe excitement of the Vander Esch pick was short lived as Cowboys Nation cringed at the sight of All Pro guard Zack Martin on the ground holding his leg.The Cowboys were already without All-Pro center Travis Frederick as well as it being their first game without rookie Connor Williams at left guard. With no Martin, the entire interior offensive line was being manned by backups at one point - Joe Looney, Xavier Su’a-Filo, and Adam Redmond.Martin would later return because, let’s face it - he’s super tough. The guy is amazing.Props goes out to the entire offensive line. With more time under Marc Columbo and Hudson Houck this group will continue to improve. And we have to tip our cap to Xavier Su’a Filo who filled in really well for Williams. This could make things interesting going forward. The Eagles front is legit, so for this group to come out and play so well has to be encouraging. 3. Miscues on special teamsThe Cowboys defense was doing their job early, but that didn’t translate into rewarding field position thanks to some bad mistakes on special teams. On the Eagles first punt of the game, Cole Beasley opted to let a bouncing ball go past him as to not risk a potential muffed recovery. The ball took a nice roll, costing the team extra yardage, but it was made worse by a holding penalty by Byron Jones. It backed the offense deep in their own territory inside the 10-yard line. Then, on the Eagles next punt, the Cowboys again had a penalty again when Dorance Armstrong got called for a block in the back. The unfortunate thing was that he blocked the Eagles coverage guy right into Beasley for the tackle. Once again, the Cowboys offense started their possession deep in their own territory inside the 10-yard line.4. Go for itBoth teams were pulling out all the stops with an early decision to go for it on fourth down. The Cowboys converted a third and long into a short fourth-down attempt. Jason Garrett kept his troops on the field and they had a nice bootleg run called that looked like Dak Prescott would’ve converted, but unfortunately a false start penalty messed that all up. The Cowboys then had to punt.Doug Pederson would get his chance to go for it on the ensuing drive when the Eagles had a fourth and short at the Cowboys 20-yard line, but Jaylon Smith was able to shoot the gap and tackle Eagles running back Josh Adams for a three-yard loss and a turnover on downs. But it didn’t stop there. On the next possession Authentic Deonte Thompson Jersey , the Cowboys reached in their bag of tricks and pulled off a fake punt on a 4th-and-2 play where Jeff Heath took the direct snap and pushed through the middle for the first down.Jeff Heath showed up on fourth down in this game. Not just with this fake punt, but the big fourth-down stop late in the game. Heath loves making game-saving plays on Sunday night. It’s sorta his thing.5. So closeWhen Ezekiel Elliott broke a big run and hurdled an Eagles defender, it looked like it was going to be one of those highlight plays for the ages...if only he could have stayed on his feet.It ended up costing the Cowboys four points as the offense couldn’t find the end zone and had to settle for a Brett Maher field goal. The Cowboys got those three points back when Chidobe Awuzie was able to get his hand out to knock down a deep pass to Alshon Jeffrey. The play saved a touchdown and kept the Eagles to three points on that possession.6. Overcoming adversityAfter Jake Elliott hit that 56-yard field goal to put the Eagles on the board, the Cowboys had a critical possession towards the end of the first half. Philadelphia had all three time outs and were hoping for a three-and-out so they could have another shot at scoring before the half. And it looked like they were going to get their chance after a Prescott sack. But, the Cowboys had other plans. After a well-executed passing play to Michael Gallup picked up the first down, the Cowboys kept rolling and scored their first touchdown of the night. There were several times in the game where the Eagles started gaining momentum and it looked like the Cowboys could have just collapsed. But they didn’t. Even when the Eagles offense finally got rolling in the second half, the Cowboys offense came right back with touchdowns of their own.Prescott did a great job overcoming some early struggles, only to keep it together and make some huge plays later in the game. He missed some targets early, took some costly sacks, and had another one of those slippery ball incidents, but all-in-all, the Cowboys young quarterback showed up when it mattered the most.Garrett preaches about staying focused and shaking things off and concentrating on the next play and his team did just that on Sunday night.7. Home field love from the RefsThe Cowboys hurt themselves with some bad penalties and in the end, would come out on the wrong end of the penalty battle. Dallas had five penalties for 37 yards, where the Eagles weren’t called for a single penalty. Not one. Philly did a good job staying disciplined, but they weren’t that disciplined.Cris Collingsworth highlighted what a great job Wentz did throwing the ball while his wristband was being tugged on. Pay no attention to the Eagles blocker grabbing Damien Wilson around the neck. The refs also completely ignored and illegal man downfield penalty on an Eagles RPO play. Center Jason Kelece was about five yards down field when the ball was thrown. 8. Fly Zeke flyEzekiel Elliott was gassed in this game and for good reason. The Cowboys leaned on their star running back quite a bit in this game. Zeke had 19 carries for 151 yards for an average of 7.9 yards per carry. He also added 36 yards receiving. Elliott scored two touchdowns in the game, both coming in the fourth quarter. It was a great performance considering the Eagles came into the game with the second-best run defense in the league. The Eagles also came into this game with the highest time of possession percentage in the league, but the Cowboys were able to win the TOP battle by keeping it over 33 minutes in the game.9. The ghost of drafts past, present, and futureOn Saturday, we wrote about how a few first-round draft picks could help the Cowboys beat the Eagles on Sunday night. Well, they delivered.Zeke was a monster on offense, LVE was a beast on defense, and let’s not forget the Amari Cooper effect.10. We still have a race in the EastThe Cowboys kept their season alive tonight with a big win. They are now 4-5, tied with the Eagles and still two games behind Washington. If the Cowboys can win next week, it’s going to set the stage for a great Thanksgiving matchup with the Redskins. Philadelphia and Washington still have to play each other twice.Philadelphia will now travel to New Orleans next week to face a Saints team that is playing like the best team in the league right now. This win isn’t anything to be pumping our fist about as there is still a lot of work to do. But as these groups gradually improve and the offense finds it’s way, it could give the team a fighting chance.

have been on the road the past two weeks. The Bills bring with them a nonexistent offense and a very good defense. In theory www.coltscheapshop.com , this is a game that the Colts should win, and win handily. However, wins in the NFL are rarely easy, and this Colts team hasn’t put together many complete games this season. With the Bills this week and the Raiders next week, the Colts have the opportunity to go into their bye week with two wins against inferior opponents. That starts with getting a win at home on Sunday. Here is all the information you need to tune in:Game Time1pm ET Sunday October 21st, 2018LocationLucas Oil Stadium – Indianapolis, IndianaTV ChannelCBS – Spere Dedes and Adam ArchuletaRadioWFNI (1070 The Fan) and WLHK (HANK FM) — Matt Taylor (play-by-play), Jim Sorgi (color) and Caroline Cann (sideline)Referee AssignmentBrad Allen“Enemy” BlogBuffalo RumblingsTwitterFollow @StampedeBlue for the complete Colts coverage.FacebookLike Stampede Blue on Facebook!PodcastsApple Podcasts | Stitcher | Art 19 | SB Colts Cast YT ChannelColts fans remain confident in the team despite a slow start Bill Parcells famously said, “You are what your record says you are.” If that maxim holds true Indianapolis Colts T-Shirt , the Colts aren’t a very good football team. At 1-4, they are dead last in the AFC South. They are one of the youngest teams in football with an average age of 25.8--that’s with Adam Vinatieri at 46. This team has just 7 players, Vinny included, who are 30-years-old or older. In line with expectations for a young team with an all new coaching staff, this team has struggled with consistency. They’ve been unable to close out games that they should have won. They have had some coaching miscues that have cost them, which you’d expect from a staff with a first-time head coach and two first-time coordinators. At times they simply haven’t been able to make the plays needed to win. Some of that is due to inexperience, and some of it is due to the team lacking talent in several areas. All this begs the question: Why are fans still so buoyant about this Colts team? Following a harrowing loss against the Patriots in New England which saw what felt like half the team exit with injuries, fan confidence dropped by just 8% according to this week’s FanPulse survey. At 84%, it still sits well above the Titans Indianapolis Colts Hats , Jaguars, and Texans. Titans fans’ confidence saw a drop heading into their home contest against the Ravens.A loss to the Chiefs has Jaguars fans feeling nervous heading into their road game against the Cowboys.Despite a win last week and hosting the floundering Bills, Texans’ fans hopes are still pretty low.So what gives? There are a couple of possibilities. First, Colts fans have been hearing from Chris Ballard all along that this is a multi-year process. He set pretty honest expectations ahead of this season. This was a team that was to be a work in progress. The bar for success across the season at large was that the team show marked improvement in areas of deficiency. One of those areas which the Colts have struggled heavily in over much of the last decade is in creating an impactful pass rush. We have seen that change this season. The Colts are currently tied for 3rd in the NFL in sacks, with 17. That is just 8 sacks shy of their season total last year. Definitely a sign of improvement. Another area of improvement has been in protecting the quarterback. Despite missing starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo and suffering a slew of other injuries on the offensive line, they’ve done that. The Colts have faced a barrage of tough defensive lines and have given up just 10 sacks, compared with 14 through 5 games last season. Some of this has been due to scheme and some has been improved depth and skill on the line, but with the impending return of Anthony Castonzo, the line play should be better still.Photo by Rob Carr/Getty ImagesThe linebacker group has been a major weakness for the team in recent years as well Indianapolis Colts Hoodie , and the breakout performance of rookie Darius Leonard has almost certainly had an impact on fans’ perception of the team. Leonard missed last week and still leads the NFL in tackles. His play so far has him as a front runner for Defensive Rookie of the Year, and that kind of spark on the defense has fans believing the arrow is pointing way up for that side of the ball. Another significant factor is the effectiveness of the 2018 draft class. There are already five players who have made significant contributions in terms of playing time from this draft class. Additionally, Deon Cain showed a great deal of promise before being injured, and Braden Smith has looked good when called upon as well. Tyquan Lewis hasn’t seen the field, going to injured reserve before the start of the season, and Matthew Adams and Zaire Franklin have been special teams contributors and filled in due to injuries. Getting this much contribution right away from your rookies is both a good and bad thing. It means your team isn’t that great because otherwise rookies likely aren’t able to start, but it also means you’ve got guys who are getting experience that will be invaluable down the road. I say all this to say, Colts’ fans expectations and confidence may be staying high due in large part to the fact that they have adopted a long view for the team. They may not be a great team this year, but with a good draft class and some key free agents Cheap Customized Indianapolis Colts Jerseys , they can be next year. The other possibility is that fans have seen so much improvement despite the level of injury across the roster, that they think this team has the potential to go on a run. The Colts’ schedule softens up heading into their bye week, and after that they have all but 1 of their divisional games. While many don’t see the Colts as a team capable of putting together a great deal of success, they’ve been without a lot of key players early in the season and still hung around with some very good teams. If they are able to get healthy down the stretch, this is a team that has the capability of rattling off a lot of wins. Andrew Luck has rounded into form over the last two games, despite his surrounding cast largely inhabiting the medical tent. A healthy team around him could be enough to begin a major turnaround. If the Colts are able to win out through their bye week they’ll sit at 4-4 with a favorable back half of their schedule and a chance to get healthier still. Photo by Rob Carr/Getty ImagesIf there is one thing that the Colts have learned since 2012, it is that if you’ve got Andrew Luck and you are within striking distance, you’ve got a chance. rs was simply too much to overcome Youth Customized Indianapolis Colts Jerseys , and it often will be. The injury situation has become so absurd that Indianapolis finished the game with only two healthy receivers. Tight end Eric Ebron was clearly on a pitch count due to injury. On the positive end, Andrew Luck was kept fairly clean throughout the entire game. The second half saw Marlon Mack and the ground game come to life. There were a couple of occasions where the line visibly was out of sync and it hurts that this is the fifth offensive line combination the Colts have used in just six games. If the line can stay free from injury moving forward, it will be interesting to see how the units comes together — particularly the left side with Castonzo, Nelson, and Kelly. The negative, there is no end in sight for the dropped passes at this point. Numerous drops by Chester Rogers, Zach Pascal, Marlon Mack, and even a key drop by Ryan Grant helped lead to stalled offensive drives. Bad decision-making by Andrew Luck played a part as well, particularly during an important fourth down drive where he was called for intentional grounding and completely missed Darron Lee in coverage. Luck has shown a bad habit of guessing and throwing where he thinks his receivers might be on the field. It led to an interception last week and an intentional grounding penalty this week. He is not using his eyes to make good decisions. His desire to get the ball out quickly needs to take a backseat to vision and sound decision-making.The Colts defense was unable to get off of the field in the second half. Injuries to Clayton Geathers and Matthias Farley caused Chris Ballard to bring in veteran safety Mike Mitchell and it is possible that Matt Eberflus was not overly confident in zone coverage. In the second half in particular, it appears that Darius Leonard was no longer on the field. Without Leonard, Skai Moore, Geathers, or Farley, the Colts chose to go with man pass coverage. The results were disastrous. There is no way to get around the fact that the Colts are playing bad football right now. We can acknowledge that injuries have played a role in the struggles. However, at the end of the day, Chris Ballard must make a major effort throughout the rest of this season and as he prepares for 2019 to make his team better across the board. There are key young players who provide a reason for the Colts fan base to remain confident in the direction Ballard is heading but with a projected $100 million in space next year, now is the time to go big or go home. The Colts fell to 1-5 with the loss and any reasonable hope that this won’t be another lost season is slipping away. We’ll revisit our five keys to to game.CATCH THE DAMN BALLThe first two passes of the game hit Luck’s intended targets in the hands. In succession, Chester Rogers and Marlon Mack are unable to haul in the pass. Rogers knocked the ball up in the air but no defender was around to take advantage. Mack was not as lucky and a tipped ball ended up in Morris Claiborne’s hands for a pick-six. Indianapolis found itself in an early hole again due to offensive mistakes.Early in the second quarter the Colts had a chance to get a touchdown after Malik Hooker’s interception. Rather than take the lead for the first time in the game, Nyheim Hines jumped into the air in the end zone and was unable to handle a pass that hit him right in the chest. If he doesn’t jump in the air and simply catches the ball with his hands, it’s a touchdown. Instead, the Colts had to settle for a field goal.On the next offensive drive, Chester Rogers dropped a pass that hit him in the hands on a crossing route that could have put the Colts in a great situation threatening in the red zone. Instead, it resulted in a third-and-10 and Reich ran the ball with Robert Turbin to create a manageable third down situation. The Colts had to settle for a field goal.On the Colts two-minute drive at the end of the half, with a chance to get back on top, a quick throw to the middle of the field to Ryan Grant bounced off of his hands and into Avery Williamson’s. Zach Pascal had a pass bounce off of his hands on first down in the third quarter while the offense was in the middle of a nice drive. It could have easily been another first down but instead setup 2nd and 10. PRESSURE DARNOLDDarnold didn’t face much pressure all day. He took a couple of sacks but one was a broken play and was beautifully read by Jabaal Sheard. Not having Autry and Hunt played a visible role in an ineffective pass rush.SHUT DOWN CROWELL AND POWELLAfter a monster game a week ago, the Jets were unable to get either Isaiah Crowell or Bilal Powell going on the ground. This made life very difficult for their offense. It was clear early that Darnold isn’t ready to be the engine of the offense and that the Jets did not enter a game with a developed “Plan B” if the ground game stalled. In the first half, the Jets are averaging 2.3 yards per carry. The second half saw the running backs get a little bit more involved that they still finished with just over 100 yards and only 3 yard per carry.OFFENSIVE LINE COMMUNICATIONOutside of a penalty for a block in the back early and a false start on Anthony Castonzo in his first game this season, the offensive line did a nice job of keeping the pocket clean for Luck in the first half. There were a couple of times that Luck had to step up into the pocket but at least he had a place to go.The running game continued to struggle in the first half www.coltsauthorizedshops.com , even with Castonzo back on the field. The second half saw both of the themes switch to a degree. Luck had more pressure come into his face, including some from the left side of the line, while Marlon Mack had nice running lanes to generate a lot of yards. Mack finished the game with a 7.4 yard per carry average.NO DRIVE-KILLING MISTAKESThe first drive-killing mistakes was back-to-back drops on the Colts’ first offensive drive. The mistakes culminated in a pick-six and put Indianapolis in an early hole. The second mistake was a drop by Nyheim Hines in the end zone that turned a sure touchdown into a field goal and an early lead into a 10-10 tie. It was a scoring drive but a touchdown drive killing mistake.Another offensive drive was killed on 3rd-and-1 when short-yardage expert Robert Turbin coughed up the football. His fumble was recovered in Colts territory and gave the Jets excellent field position. On a two minute drive at the end of the first half, Luck targeted Ryan Grant and the ball ricocheted off of his hands and was picked off by Avery Williamson. This created another short field for the Jets with a chance to extend their lead before half time.In the second half, Luck thew an interception that ended a key drive with the Colts down only nine and a chance to cut the game to within a field goal. This setup a short field for the Jets who capitalized with a field goal pushing the lead to 12. The following drive stalled out after Luck failed to find receiver Zach Pascal twice and missed Eric Ebron wide to the right. The NFL is getting roughed up over its amplified enforcement of roughing-the-passer penalties that has generated head-scratching calls — and a season-ending injury to a defender trying to comply with the league's mandate not to land fully on the quarterback. In the offseason, NFL owners asked the league's competition committee to better protect their prized quarterbacks after Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr broke Packers star Aaron Rodgers' collarbone in 2017.So the league dusted off a rarely invoked 24-year-old rule that outlaws defenders from landing on the quarterback with more than half of their body weight."It helps me out because I'm a quarterback," said Deshaun Watson of the Texans. "But some of the calls are just kind of crazy."So inconsistent, in fact, that Packers linebacker Clay Matthews , whose been whistled three times, suggested the league has gone soft. He argued that what constitutes a clean hit is anybody's guess nowadays.Defenders who are only allowed to target a strike zone basically consisting of the torso now must also concern themselves with breaking the quarterback's fall. Or at least doing a "gator roll" where they spin the QB as they tumble to the turf. The gator roll is "an unnatural move when you are trying to tackle a big guy" like Ben Roethlisberger or Andrew Luck, said Bengals defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. "They will shrug you off."Broncos linebacker Shane Ray said the gator roll isn't even an option much of the time."Sometimes you're at an awkward angle or you might be pushed into him," Ray said. "It's chaotic in there when you've got all these bodies flying around."Trying to keep the quarterback safe can also be dangerous to a defender, as it was Sunday when Dolphins DE William Hayes tore his right ACL trying to avoid landing on Raiders QB Derek Carr."They don't care about the rest of us getting hurt. Long as the QB is safe," fumed 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman when he retweeted a video clip of Hayes getting hurt ."Let's keep it honest, that rule is a tough rule to gauge," Dolphins defensive tackle Akeem Spence said. "Will is going to make a play, trying to sack the quarterback and then roll off at the end, not trying to put all of his weight and get a sack taken away. He ended up being hurt, and it sucks, because he's trying to protect the quarterback while still trying to make a play."There have been 34 roughing-the-passer calls so far. While that works out to just one flag for every 100 pass attempts, it represents a massive increase over previous years. There were 16 such penalties through three weeks last season and 20 the year before that. The lack of consistency and clarity is why "I don't like the rule," said Fox's Troy Aikman, whose Hall of Fame career was cut short by the battering he took during a 12-year stint as Cowboys quarterback."I think the league overreacted, and I think they will continue to look at it with the controversy that's been created," Aikman said, adding the strict interpretation of the 1995 rule "changes the outcome of games and ultimately will cost some coaches their jobs."There's only been a handful of flags, meanwhile, for players lowering their helmet Indianapolis Colts Womens T-Shirt , another point of emphasis, showing that players, coaches and officials have all adjusted accordingly to that rule change. Two people with knowledge of the agenda told The Associated Press that in the regularly scheduled competition committee conference call next week, the roughing-the-passer calls will be discussed. While neither anticipates a change in the rules themselves, it's possible a de-emphasizing of the "full weight" portion of the rule could occur. That point of emphasis this year has led to all kinds of contentious calls, none more prominent than Matthews' seemingly legal hit in Week 2 that wiped out a clinching interception of Kirk Cousins, who subsequently rallied the Vikings to a 29-29 tie."Roughing the Passer calls are absolutely out of control," Texans star defender J.J. Watt tweeted during the Steelers-Buccaneers Monday night game that featured four such flags.Although Matthews' hit on Cousins wasn't deemed a body weight violation, the league's emphasis on roughing calls clearly played a role in referee Tony Corrente ruling that when Matthews "hit the quarterback, he lifted him and drove him into the ground."Many critics didn't buy that explanation nor the justifications for the other calls."I love the NFL - but it's crazy the (numbers) being put up by QBs & WRs due to fact that D can't hit them anymore & can't lay hands on them downfield," tweeted Hall of Famer Kurt Warner , the architect of the Rams' "Greatest Show on Turf.""Everyone is running free the entire game (or it's a penalty)! Don't get me wrong I LOVE Offense, but better when it's a fair fight."The last two men who served as the NFL's head of officiating — Mike Pereira and Dan Blandino — said the league went too far in emphasizing roughing the quarterback and will back off soon because officials are throwing too many flags on plays where the QB isn't even in danger of getting hurt."I think we all have felt like it has gone a little too far," said Pereira, now an analyst for Fox Sports.Pereira said the NFL could tamp down the furor over the rule by having officials only throw flags when defenders lift the quarterback and drive him into the ground — although he disagrees that's what Matthews did to Cousins."We all are pretty much in agreement the Clay Matthews hit on Kirk Cousins really shouldn't be a foul, and I believe that's what the competition committee believes," Pereira said. "How literal do we need to interpret a rule?"Former NFL referee Terry McAulay, now an analyst for NBC, notes the focal point needs to be on whether the defender's hit included "unnecessary" actions. He refers to a graphic of the rule used on Sunday night's Patriots-Lions telecast."We've highlighted a couple of words. One is the word 'unnecessarily,' and it says a defender should not unnecessarily land on the quarterback," McAulay explained. "There is nothing about this play (by Matthews on Alex Smith) that is unnecessary. He's coming off a block and he makes a legal form tackle, and he just happens to end up on top of the quarterback."The graphic also notes "strive to wrap up.""That tells me that it needs to be avoidable. Well, there's nothing unavoidable about this play," McAulay said. "It just shouldn't be a foul. I understand technically that it is by rule."Broncos star Von Miller , who leads the league with 87 1-2 sacks since his rookie year in 2011, said he's not sure how he's supposed to tackle the quarterback anymore, so he'll just stick with his signature move."I like going for the ball," said Miller.Because going for the sack is becoming as perilous for the pass rusher as it is for the quarterback.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (16-3)New faces: DE Michael Bennett Authentic Darius Leonard Jersey , orey Nelson, P Cameron Johnston, rookies CB Avonte Maddox, TE Dallas Goedert, DE Josh Sweat.Key losses: RB LeGarrette Blount, TE Trey Burton, TE Brent Celek, DT Beau Allen, DE Vinny Curry, CB Patrick Robinson, WR Torrey Smith Authentic J'Marcus Webb Jersey , offensive coordinator Frank Reich, quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo.Strengths: Plenty of depth at QB with Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles backing up Carson Wentz. Before he tore ACL, Wentz had MVP-caliber season. Offensive line could be best in NFL with nine-time Pro Bowl LT Jason Peters returning from ACL injury to join pair of All-Pros — C Jason Kelce and RT Lane Johnson — and Pro Bowl RG Brandon Brooks. Defense was mostly excellent except when it faced Tom Brady.Weaknesses: Defense lacks depth at linebacker and is counting heavily on Jordan Hicks returning from his second Achilles tendon injury. Offensive line is inexperienced beyond starting five and backup T Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Johnston enters his first season.Fantasy Player To Watch: TE Zach Ertz. First-time Pro Bowl pick who caught go-ahead TD pass in Super Bowl, Ertz had 74 catches for 824 yards and eight TDs. He's Wentz's go-to guy and numbers could get better with addition of Goedert helping cause matchup problems for defenses inside red zone.Vegas Says: Super Bowl 9-1. Over/under wins 10.5.Expectations: Eagles enter season trying to become only ninth team to repeat as Super Bowl champs and first since New England following 2004 season. It won't be easy. Division opponents got better, and conference is tougher. But team is young, talented and motivated, especially Wentz because he watched Super Bowl victory from sideline. If key players stay healthy, they could make another deep run.Fantasy Football: Start and Sit matchups for Week 5 of the season Sit: Tyreek Hill (Chiefs) and Sterling Shepard (Giants)In a Kansas City offense with numerous weapons, Hill is only garnering eight targets a game this season. The Jaguars secondary unit, led by Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Boyue, are allowing a just 183 passing yards a game. On the other side with Shepard, Shepard came through in a highly favorable matchup last week, but Eli Manning isn’t having the greatest outing of his career, which will allow a Jets defense — a unit allowing the fewest fantasy points to opposing receivers this season — to potentially have a big day. Photo by Logan Bowles/Getty ImagesStart: Dede Westbrook www.indianapoliscoltsteamonline.com , JaguarsWestbrook is coming off a performance of 130 yards against the New York Jets, a matchup in which he saw 13 targets. With Marquise Lee gone for the season, Westbrook is clearly one of Blake Bortles’ go-to receivers, setting up a prime performance against a Kansas City Chief defense that is giving up 7.9 yards per attempt thus far. Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesStart: T.J. Yeldon, JaguarsYeldon is in prime position to have a big week. It seems like Leonard Fournette, the former No. 4 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, is never going to put together a full slate of 16 games, and that’s okay for a Jacksonville team that can use other backs until the playoffs. 2018 might be a lost year for Fournette, fantasy wise, due to several hamstring issues. The good news for Yeldonowners is that the former Alabama running back has the chance to assume the role as the lead back behind Blake Bortles. One week ago, Yeldon eclipsed 100 yards from scrimmage, scoring a touchdown on the ground and through the air.
